パンダの もちくんと よるの ともだちMochi the Panda and His Nighttime Friends

むかしむかし、山やまおくの 竹たけばやしに、小ちいさな パンダの もちくんが すんでいました。Long, long ago, in a bamboo grove deep in the mountains, there lived a little panda named Mochi.

もちくんは 毎日まいにち、竹たけを ポリポリ 食たべて、ひるねをして、また 竹たけを 食たべる。そんな 毎日まいにちを すごしていました。Every day, Mochi would munch on bamboo, take a nap, and then munch on more bamboo. That was how he spent his days.

でも、ひとつだけ こまっていることが ありました。But there was one thing that troubled him.

もちくんには、友ともだちが いなかったのです。Mochi had no friends.

「今日きょうも 一人ひとりで ごはんだな」"Another meal alone today."

もちくんは、ため息いきを つきながら、大おおきな 竹たけを ポリポリ 食たべました。Mochi sighed and munched on a big piece of bamboo.

夕ゆうやけが 空そらを オレンジ色いろに そめて、だんだん 暗くらくなってきました。The sunset painted the sky orange, and it slowly grew darker.

「そろそろ ねようかな」"Maybe I should go to sleep soon."

もちくんが そう思おもったとき、空そらに まん丸まるの お月つきさまが のぼってきました。Just as Mochi thought this, a round, round moon rose in the sky.

「わあ、きれいだな」"Wow, how beautiful."

お月つきさまの 光ひかが、竹たけばやしを 明あかるく てらしています。The moonlight lit up the bamboo grove brightly.

もちくんは、なんだか むねが ドキドキしてきました。Mochi's heart began to beat faster.

「今日きょうは 少すこしだけ、おさんぽに 行いってみようかな」"Maybe I'll go for a little walk today."

もちくんは、ゆっくりと 竹たけばやしを 歩あるきはじめました。Mochi slowly began walking through the bamboo grove.

サワサワサワ。竹たけの 葉はっぱが 風かぜに ゆれています。Swish, swish, swish. The bamboo leaves swayed in the wind.

もちくんは、いつもより ずっと 遠とおくまで 歩あるいてきました。Mochi had walked much farther than usual.

すると、どこからか 小ちいさな 声こえが 聞きこえてきました。Then, a small voice came from somewhere.

「えーん、えーん」"Waah, waah."

「だれか ないてるの?」"Is someone crying?"

もちくんは、声こえのする 方ほうへ 歩あるいていきました。Mochi walked toward the sound of the voice.

大おおきな 岩いわの かげに、小ちいさな 動物どうぶつが うずくまっていました。Behind a big rock, a small animal was huddled up.

ふわふわの しっぽに、まるっこい おみみ。あか茶ちゃいろの 体からだに、黒くろい もようが あります。It had a fluffy tail and round ears. Its reddish-brown body had black markings.

「あなたは だあれ?」"Who are you?"

もちくんが やさしく きくと、その子こは 顔かおを あげました。When Mochi asked gently, the little one looked up.

「わたしは レッサーパンダの リッちゃん。道みちに まよっちゃったの」"I'm Ri, a red panda. I got lost."

リッちゃんの おめめには、なみだが キラキラ 光ひかっていました。Tears sparkled in Ri's eyes.

「おうちは どこ?」"Where is your home?"

「山やまの むこうがわの 森もり。でも、暗くらくて 見みえなくなっちゃった」"In the forest on the other side of the mountain. But it got too dark to see."

もちくんは、リッちゃんの そばに すわりました。Mochi sat down next to Ri.

「だいじょうぶだよ。ぼくも 一人ひとりで さびしかったんだ。一しょに おうちを さがそう」"It's okay. I was feeling lonely too. Let's find your home together."

「ほんとう? ありがとう」"Really? Thank you."

リッちゃんは、小ちいさく わらいました。Ri smiled a little.

二人ふたりは、手てを つないで 歩あるきはじめました。The two held hands and began to walk.

お月つきさまが、道みちを 明あかるく てらしてくれます。The moon lit up the path brightly for them.

「もちくんは、どうして 一人ひとりで おさんぽしてたの?」"Mochi, why were you walking alone?"

「ぼく、友ともだちが いないんだ。だから、毎日まいにち ちょっと さびしくて」"I don't have any friends. So I feel a bit lonely every day."

「わたしも 同おなじ。森もりには ほかの レッサーパンダが いないから、あそぶ 友ともだちが いないの」"Me too. There are no other red pandas in the forest, so I have no one to play with."

二人ふたりは、おたがいを 見みつめあいました。The two looked at each other.

「じゃあ、わたしたち、友ともだちに なろうよ」"Then let's become friends."

リッちゃんが そう 言いうと、もちくんは とても うれしくなりました。When Ri said that, Mochi felt very happy.

「うん、なろうなろう」"Yes, let's."

そのとき、上うえのほうから 声こえが しました。Just then, a voice came from above.

「おーい、下したにいるの だあれー?」"Hey, who's down there?"

二人ふたりが 見み上うえげると、大おおきな 木きの えだから だれかが 顔かおを だしていました。When the two looked up, someone was peeking from a branch of a big tree.

ひろげた 両手りょうてと 両足りょうあしの あいだに、うすい まくが あります。Between their spread arms and legs, there was a thin membrane.

「わたしは ムササビの ムサくん。きみたち、こんな 夜よるに なにしてるの?」"I'm Musa, a flying squirrel. What are you two doing out this late at night?"

「リッちゃんの おうちを さがしてるんだ」"We're looking for Ri's home."

もちくんが そう 言いうと、ムサくんは パッと えだから とびだしました。When Mochi said this, Musa jumped from the branch.

ヒュウウウウ。ムサくんは、まるで まほうの じゅうたんみたいに 空そらを とんで、二人ふたりの 前まえに おりてきました。Whoosh. Musa flew through the air like a magic carpet and landed in front of the two.

「すごい。空そらを とべるんだね」"Wow. You can fly."

「うん。山やまの むこうがわなら、ぼくの すみかの 近ちかくだよ。あんないしてあげる」"Yes. The other side of the mountain is near where I live. I'll show you the way."

ムサくんも 一しょに 歩あるきはじめました。Musa joined them and they began walking together.

三人さんにんは、山やまの さかみちを のぼっていきます。The three climbed up the mountain path.

「ね、見みて。お星ほしさまが いっぱい」"Look, so many stars."

リッちゃんが 空そらを ゆびさしました。Ri pointed at the sky.

山やまの 上うえに くると、空そらが とても 広ひろく 見みえます。When they reached the top of the mountain, the sky looked very wide.

お月つきさまの まわりに、かぞえきれないほどの お星ほしさまが キラキラ かがやいていました。Around the moon, countless stars sparkled and shone.

「きれいだなあ」"How beautiful."

もちくんは、こんなに きれいな 夜空よぞらを はじめて 見みました。Mochi had never seen such a beautiful night sky before.

「一人ひとりだと きづかなかったけど、みんなと 見みると もっと きれいに見みえるね」"I never noticed when I was alone, but it looks even more beautiful when we're together."

ムサくんが そう 言いいました。Musa said.

「うん、ほんとうだね」"Yes, it really does."

三人さんにんは、よりそって 夜空よぞらを ながめました。The three snuggled together and gazed at the night sky.

しばらくすると、リッちゃんが 声こえを あげました。After a while, Ri raised her voice.

「あ、山やまの むこうに あかりが 見みえる。あれ、わたしの おうちだ」"Oh, I can see a light beyond the mountain. That's my home."

もちくんは、ちょっと さびしくなりました。Mochi felt a little sad.

「そっか。じゃあ、おわかれだね」"I see. Then this is goodbye."

すると、リッちゃんが もちくんの 手てを にぎりました。But Ri held Mochi's hand.

「おわかれ じゃないよ。だって、わたしたち 友ともだちに なったでしょう? また あそぼうね」"It's not goodbye. We became friends, remember? Let's play again."

「そうだよ。ぼくも また あいにくるよ」"That's right. I'll come see you again too."

ムサくんも うなずきました。Musa nodded.

もちくんの むねが、ぽかぽかと あたたかくなりました。Mochi's chest felt warm and cozy.

「うん、やくそくだよ」"Yes, it's a promise."

リッちゃんは、手てを ふりながら 山やまを おりていきました。Ri waved as she went down the mountain.

「ばいばい、また 明日あしたね」"Bye-bye, see you tomorrow."

「ばいばい」"Bye-bye."

もちくんと ムサくんも、手てを ふりました。Mochi and Musa waved too.

リッちゃんの すがたが 見みえなくなるまで、二人ふたりは ずっと 見みおくりました。They watched until Ri's figure disappeared from sight.

「もちくん、きみも 帰かえるの?」"Mochi, are you going home too?"

「うん、竹たけばやしまで 帰かえるよ」"Yes, I'm going back to the bamboo grove."

「じゃあ、またね。こんどは ひるまに あそぼうよ」"Okay, see you. Let's play during the day next time."

「うん、たのしみにしてる」"Yes, I'm looking forward to it."

ムサくんは、ヒュウウウと 木きの 上うえに もどっていきました。Musa flew back up to the tree with a whoosh.

もちくんは、一人ひとりで 竹たけばやしへ 帰かえりました。Mochi walked back to the bamboo grove alone.

でも、さっきまでと ちがって、ぜんぜん さびしくありません。But unlike before, he didn't feel lonely at all.

「友ともだちが できたんだ」"I made friends."

お月つきさまに むかって、もちくんは 小ちいさく つぶやきました。Mochi whispered quietly to the moon.

竹たけばやしに つくと、もちくんは いつもの ばしょに よこになりました。When he arrived at the bamboo grove, Mochi lay down in his usual spot.

お月つきさまが、やさしく もちくんを てらしています。The moon gently shone on Mochi.

「リッちゃん、ムサくん、また 明日あしたね」"Ri, Musa, see you tomorrow."

もちくんは、うれしくて なみだが 出でそうに なりました。Mochi was so happy that tears almost came out.

でも、かなしい なみだ じゃない。しあわせな なみだ。But they weren't sad tears. They were happy tears.

もちくんは、目めを とじました。Mochi closed his eyes.

明日あしたは どんな あそびを しようかな。リッちゃんに 竹たけを 食たべさせて あげようかな。ムサくんと 一しょに 空そらを とんでみたいな。What kind of games should we play tomorrow? Maybe I'll let Ri try some bamboo. I want to fly through the sky with Musa.

たのしい ことを かんがえながら、もちくんは 少すこしずつ ねむくなってきました。Thinking about fun things, Mochi slowly became sleepy.

夜空よぞらの お星ほしさまが、もちくんを 見みまもっています。The stars in the night sky watched over Mochi.

お月つきさまが、そっと ささやきました。The moon whispered softly.

「おやすみ、もちくん。すてきな ゆめを 見みてね」"Good night, Mochi. May you have sweet dreams."

もちくんは、にっこり わらって、すやすや ねむりに おちていきました。Mochi smiled and gently drifted off to sleep.
