こりすのムギくんと ことりのミクちゃんMugi the Squirrel and Miku the Bird

秋あきの 森もりは、金色きんいろの 葉はっぱで いっぱいでした。The autumn forest was full of golden leaves.

小こりすの ムギくんは、大おおきな かしの木きの 下したで、どんぐりを 集あつめていました。Mugi the squirrel was gathering acorns under a big oak tree.

ムギくんは いつも ひとりぼっち。ほかの りすたちは 遠とおくの 森もりに 行いってしまって、ムギくんだけが この森もりに 残のこっていたのです。Mugi was always alone. The other squirrels had gone to a faraway forest, and only Mugi had stayed behind in this one.

「今日きょうも たくさん 集あつめたぞ。でも、ひとりだと ちょっと さびしいな」"I gathered lots again today. But being alone is a little lonely."

ムギくんが 空そらを 見上みあげると、黄色きいろい 葉はっぱが ひらひらと 落おちてきました。When Mugi looked up at the sky, yellow leaves fluttered down.

そのとき、どこかから 小こさな 声こえが 聞きこえてきました。Just then, a tiny voice came from somewhere.

「だれか、助たすけて」"Someone, please help me."

ムギくんは 耳みみを すませました。声こえは 草くさむらの ほうから 聞きこえてきます。Mugi listened carefully. The voice was coming from the bushes.

急いそいで かけつけると、小こさな 小鳥ことりが 羽はねを おさえて うずくまっていました。水色みずいろの きれいな 羽はねを した 小鳥ことりです。He hurried over and found a small bird crouching down, holding her wing. She was a little bird with beautiful light blue feathers.

「どうしたの。大丈夫だいじょうぶ」"What's wrong? Are you okay?"

ムギくんが やさしく 声こえを かけると、小鳥ことりは 涙なみだを うかべて 言いいました。When Mugi spoke gently, the little bird answered with tears in her eyes.

「わたし、ミクっていうの。木きの枝えだに 羽はねを ぶつけちゃって、飛とべなくなっちゃったの」"My name is Miku. I hit my wing on a tree branch and now I can't fly."

「それは 大変たいへんだ。きみの おうちは どこにあるの」"Oh no, that's terrible. Where is your home?"

「山やまの 向むこうの 大おおきな もみの木きの てっぺん。お母かあさんが 待まってるのに、帰かえれないよ」"At the top of a big fir tree on the other side of the mountain. My mother is waiting for me, but I can't get back."

ミクちゃんの 目めから、大おおきな 涙なみだが ぽろぽろと こぼれました。Big tears rolled down from Miku's eyes.

ムギくんは 考かんがえました。羽はねが 治なおるまで、どうすれば いいだろう。Mugi thought about what to do. How could he help until her wing healed?

「そうだ。ぼくの おうちに おいでよ。あたたかくして、羽はねが 治なおるまで 休やすもう」"I know. Come to my house. Let's keep warm and rest until your wing gets better."

ムギくんは ミクちゃんを そっと 背中せなかに のせて、自分じぶんの 巣すに 連つれていきました。Mugi gently placed Miku on his back and took her to his nest.

かしの木きの 高たかいところに ある ムギくんの 巣すは、ふかふかの こけと かわいた 葉はっぱで できていて、とても あたたかでした。Mugi's nest high up in the oak tree was made of fluffy moss and dry leaves, and it was very warm.

「わあ、すてきな おうち。ふわふわで 気持きもちいい」"Wow, what a lovely home. It's so soft and cozy."

ミクちゃんが にっこり 笑わらいました。ムギくんは なんだか とても うれしい 気持きもちに なりました。Miku smiled happily. Mugi felt very happy too.

「おなか すいてない。どんぐり、食たべる」"Are you hungry? Would you like some acorns?"

「うん、食たべたい」"Yes, I'd love some."

ふたりは いっしょに どんぐりを 食たべました。ミクちゃんは 小こさな くちばしで こつこつと どんぐりを つつきながら、おいしそうに 食たべました。The two of them ate acorns together. Miku pecked at the acorns with her small beak, eating them deliciously.

「ムギくん、どんぐりって こんなに おいしいんだね」"Mugi, acorns are so yummy."

「そうだよ。秋あきは どんぐりの 季節きせつだからね」"They sure are. Autumn is the season for acorns."

おなかが いっぱいに なると、ふたりは いろんな お話はなを しました。When their tummies were full, they talked about all sorts of things.

ミクちゃんは 空そらの 上うえから 見みえる 景色けしきの ことを 話はなしました。雲くもの 上うえを 飛とぶと、まるで 夢ゆめの 中なかに いるみたいなんだって。Miku told him about the views from high up in the sky. Flying above the clouds feels like being in a dream.

ムギくんは 森もりの 中なかの ひみつの 場所ばしょを 教おしえました。おいしい 木きの実みが なる 木きや、冷つめたくて きれいな 小川おがわの ことを。Mugi told her about the secret places in the forest. About trees where tasty nuts grow and a cool, beautiful stream.

「ミクちゃん、羽はねが 治なおったら、いっしょに 行いこうよ」"Miku, when your wing heals, let's go together."

「うん、約束やくそくだよ」"Yes, it's a promise."

ふたりは ゆびきり、いえ、しっぽと 羽はねで 小こさな 約束やくそくを 交かわしました。They made a pinky promise—well, a tail and wing promise.

何日なんにちか 経たつと、ミクちゃんの 羽はねは すっかり 元気げんきに なりました。After several days, Miku's wing was completely healed.

「ムギくん、わたし 飛とべるように なったよ」"Mugi, I can fly again."

ミクちゃんが うれしそうに 羽はねを 広ひろげました。きれいな 水色みずいろの 羽はねが、朝日あさひを 受うけて きらきら 輝かがやいています。Miku happily spread her wings. Her beautiful light blue feathers sparkled in the morning sun.

ムギくんは うれしいけれど、少すこし さびしい 気持きもちに なりました。また ひとりぼっちに なってしまう。Mugi was happy but also felt a little sad. He would be alone again.

ミクちゃんは ムギくんの 顔かおを 見みて、すぐに 気きづきました。Miku looked at Mugi's face and understood right away.

「ムギくん、どうして 悲かなしい 顔かおを しているの」"Mugi, why do you look so sad?"

「だって、ミクちゃん 帰かえっちゃうでしょ。また ひとりに なるのが さびしくて」"Because you're going home, right? I'll be lonely being alone again."

ムギくんが しょんぼり うつむきました。Mugi hung his head sadly.

すると、ミクちゃんは やさしく 笑わらって 言いいました。Then Miku smiled gently and said, "Mugi, we're friends now. Even when friends are apart, their hearts are still connected."

「ムギくん、わたしたち もう 友ともだちだよ。友ともだちは 離はなれていても、心こころは つながっているんだよ」"Really?"

「ほんとう」"Yes, really. And you know what? I'll come visit you every day. It's quick when I fly."

「うん、ほんとう。それにね、わたし 毎日まいにち 会あいにくるよ。空そらを 飛とんで、すぐだもん」Tears welled up in Mugi's eyes. But they weren't sad tears—they were happy tears.

ムギくんの 目めに 涙なみだが うかびました。でも、それは 悲かなしい 涙なみだじゃなくて、うれしい 涙なみだでした。"Remember our promise? Let's go to the secret place in the forest together."

「約束やくそく、覚おぼえてる。いっしょに 森もりの ひみつの 場所ばしょに 行いこうね」"Of course. I'm looking forward to it."

「もちろん。楽たのしみに してるね」Miku spread her wings wide and flew up into the sky.

ミクちゃんは 大おおきく 羽はねを 広ひろげると、空そらへ 飛び立とびたちました。"See you tomorrow, Mugi."

「ムギくん、またあしたね」"Yes, see you tomorrow."

「うん、またあした」That night, Mugi looked up at the sky from his warm nest. The stars were twinkling brightly.

その日ひの 夜よる、ムギくんは あたたかい 巣すの 中なかで 空そらを 見上みあげました。お星ほしさまが きらきら 輝かがやいています。"Having friends is wonderful."

「友ともだちって、いいな」Mugi smiled happily.

ムギくんは にっこり 笑わらいました。Tomorrow, I'll go to the secret stream with Miku. It's going to be so much fun.

明日あしたは ミクちゃんと いっしょに、ひみつの 小川おがわに 行いくんだ。きっと 楽たのしいぞ。Mugi closed his eyes slowly, thinking about happy things.

ムギくんは 楽たのしい ことを 考かんがえながら、ゆっくりと 目めを 閉とじました。The moon gently lit up the forest, and the wind softly sang a lullaby.

お月つきさまが やさしく 森もりを 照てらし、風かぜが そっと 子守唄こもりうたを 歌うたっています。Mugi, Miku, and you too—drift off into warm dreams.

ムギくん、ミクちゃん、そして きみも、あたたかい 夢ゆめの 中なかへ。Good night.
