Kanade and Soyo's Forest of Sound
It was nighttime. Even after Kanade crawled into bed, she could not fall asleep. From outside the window came a strange sound, like a bell, like the wind.
When she closed her eyes and listened closely, her body suddenly felt light. Before she knew it, she was standing in a quiet forest where the tree branches rustled softly.
Good evening." A little fox cub poked its head out from behind a tree. "My name is Soyo. I take care of collecting the sounds of this forest."
Soyo looked troubled. "Last night's storm scattered the sound drops everywhere. I can't make the morning signal, and I don't know what to do." Kanade nodded and said she would help.
Deeper in the forest, a huge tree had fallen and blocked the path. Beneath it, Kanade could see tiny glowing drops buried in the ground. She felt a little scared and stopped walking.
But when she quietly hummed her favorite song, courage welled up inside her. In time with the melody, the glowing drops beneath the tree began to rise, one by one.
Kanade and Soyo went all around the forest, gathering the glowing drops one at a time. When they had collected them all, every tree in the forest began to play a gentle sound together.
Thank you, Kanade. If it weren't for your song, morning might never have come." Soyo smiled happily. Kanade felt a warm feeling spreading inside her chest.
When she opened her eyes, Kanade was back in her own bed. Outside the window it was quiet, and she could still faintly hear that gentle sound in her ears.
Let's play again sometime," Kanade whispered softly, and slowly closed her eyes.
Good night.
