Kaede and Hotori's Paper Airplane
Kaede was lying in bed, looking up at the round moon through the window by her pillow. On nights when she could not sleep, she always felt a little lonely. Just then, the moonlight sparkled outside the window and turned into a single paper airplane.
The paper airplane gently opened the window and invited Kaede outside. When she climbed aboard, her body floated up softly. "My name is Hotori. I guide travelers through the night sky," said a small voice near her ear. She looked and saw a tiny speck of starlike light perched on the tip of the paper airplane.
The two of them flew quietly over the sleeping town. One by one, the lights in the houses below went out. Kaede felt as if she had spread a pair of wings, and she gazed out over the night sky. "Just ahead, there is a meadow full of star flowers," Hotori told her.
But partway through their journey, a thick white fog rolled in on every side. She could no longer see in front of her or behind her, and the paper airplane lost its way. "Hotori, which way should we go?" Kaede's voice was swallowed up by the fog.
Hotori said, "Try looking for the small light inside yourself." Kaede closed her eyes and remembered happy times and moments that had made her glad. A warm feeling rose gently in her chest, and that warmth began to softly light the way ahead of the paper airplane. Little by little, the fog opened a path.
When they passed through the fog, a meadow full of blooming star flowers spread out before them. Kaede walked hand in hand with Hotori through the flowers. "It was scary, but you found your way with your own light," Hotori said with a gentle smile.
On the way home, the paper airplane flew straight back to Kaede's house. When she returned to her bed through the window, her heart still felt warm. Holding that warmth close, Kaede quietly closed her eyes. Good night.
