ほしの はしを わたる よるThe Night Himari Crossed the Star Bridge

ひまりは、ベッドの中なかで、まどの外そとを見みつめていました。大おおきな月つきが、白しろくひかっています。「ねむれないな」ひまりは、そっとつぶやきました。Himari lay in bed, gazing out the window. A big moon was shining white in the sky. "I can't sleep," she whispered softly.

そのとき、まどの外そとに、きらきらひかるかいだんがあらわれました。かいだんは、空そらの高たかいところまで、まっすぐにのびています。ひまりは、ふしぎな気きもちになって、そのかいだんに、足あしをのせてみました。Just then, a sparkling staircase appeared outside the window. It stretched straight up into the high sky. Feeling curious, Himari placed her foot on the first step.

かいだんをのぼると、やわらかい雲くもの上うえに出でました。そこには、小ちいさなこぎつねが、ちょこんとすわっていました。「ぼく、こむぎというんだ。星ほしの広場ひろばに、いっしょに行いかない？」ひまりは、うなずいて、こむぎのあとについていきました。At the top of the stairs, she found herself on a soft cloud. There sat a small fox cub. "I'm Komugi," he said. "Want to come with me to the star plaza?" Himari nodded and followed him.

しばらく歩あるくと、大おおきな谷たにの手前てまえで、こむぎがたちどまりました。谷たにには、星ほしの光ひかりでできたはしが、かかっています。でも、はしのまんなかが、きえかかっていました。「風かぜが強つよくて、光ひかりがきえてしまうんだ。どうしよう？」こむぎは、こまった顔かおをしました。After walking for a while, Komugi stopped at the edge of a wide valley. A bridge made of starlight stretched across it, but the middle of the bridge was fading away. "The wind is so strong, the light keeps disappearing. What should we do?" Komugi looked troubled.

ひまりは、はしをじっと見みつめました。それから、ポケットの中なかにあった、小ちいさなすずをとりだしました。すずをりんとならすと、やさしい音おとが、谷たににひびきました。すると、きえかけていた光ひかりが、すずの音おとにあわせて、また明あかるくかがやきはじめました。ふたりは、手をつないで、そっとはしをわたりました。Himari looked closely at the bridge. Then she took a small bell out of her pocket. When she rang it, a gentle sound echoed through the valley. The fading light began to glow bright again, matching the sound of the bell. Holding hands, the two of them quietly crossed the bridge.

谷たにをわたると、星ほしがいっぱいあつまる広場ひろばにつきました。星ほしたちは、ひまりとこむぎをむかえるように、きらきらとまたたきました。「ありがとう、ひまり。ゆうきをだしてくれたおかげだよ」こむぎが言いうと、ひまりのむねは、あたたかくなりました。On the other side, they arrived at a wide plaza filled with stars. The stars twinkled brightly to welcome Himari and Komugi. "Thank you, Himari. It's because you were brave," said Komugi, and Himari's heart felt warm.

帰り道かえりみち、ひまりはこむぎとやくそくをしました。「また、会あいにくるね」ひまりが言いうと、こむぎは、しっぽをゆらしてわらいました。気きがつくと、ひまりは自分じぶんのベッドの中なかにいました。まどの外そとには、大おおきな月つきが、しずかにひかっています。ひまりは、ふかくいきをすって、目めをとじました。おやすみ。On the way back, Himari made a promise with Komugi. "I'll come visit you again," she said, and Komugi laughed, swishing his tail. Before she knew it, Himari was back in her own bed. Outside the window, the big moon shone quietly. Himari took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Good night.
