まよなかのパンやさんThe Midnight Bakery

町まちのはずれに、小ちいさなパン屋やさんがありました。赤あかい屋根やねと、白しろい壁かべがとてもすてきなお店みせです。On the edge of town, there was a small bakery. It was a lovely shop with a red roof and white walls.

そのパン屋やさんの前まえには、いつも一人ひとりの女おんなの子こが住すんでいました。女おんなの子この大切たいせつな友達ともだちは、茶色ちゃいろいくまのぬいぐるみ。名前なまえはイチといいます。In front of that bakery, a little girl always lived. The girl's precious friend was a brown teddy bear. His name was Ichi.

ある夜よる、女おんなの子こがすやすやと眠ねむっていると、ふしぎなことが起おこりました。真夜中まよなかの12時じを告つげる鐘かねの音おとが、りんりんと響ひびいたのです。One night, while the girl was sleeping peacefully, something magical happened. The bells rang out, chiming midnight at twelve o'clock.

すると、イチの体からだが温あたたかい光ひかりに包つつまれました。「あれ？　体からだが　動うごく」イチはゆっくりと目めを開あけて、自分じぶんの手てを見みつめました。Then, Ichi's body was wrapped in warm light. "Huh? My body can move!" Ichi slowly opened his eyes and looked at his own paws.

窓まどの外そとを見みると、パン屋やさんの窓まどから甘あまい匂においと柔やわらかい光ひかりがもれています。「行いってみよう」イチはそっとベッドを降おりて、夜よるの町まちへ出でかけました。Looking out the window, he could see a sweet smell and soft light coming from the bakery windows. "Let me go see," Ichi thought, and quietly climbed down from the bed to go out into the night town.

パン屋やさんのドアを開あけると、中なかから温あたたかい風かぜがふわりと吹ふいてきました。そこには、驚おどろくべき世界せかいが広ひろがっていました。When Ichi opened the door to the bakery, a warm breeze gently blew from inside. There, an amazing world spread out before him.

小ちいさな小人こびとたちが、忙いそがしそうに働はたらいています。粉こなをこねたり、パンを焼やいたり、みんな楽たのしそうに歌うたいながらお仕事しごとをしていました。Tiny little people were working busily. They were kneading dough, baking bread, and everyone was singing happily while they worked.

「いらっしゃい、くまさん」一人ひとりの小人こびとがイチに気きづいて、にっこり笑わらいました。「私わたしはミイ。小麦こむぎの精霊せいれいなの」"Welcome, little bear," said one of the little people, noticing Ichi and smiling brightly. "I'm Mii. I'm a wheat spirit."

ミイは白しろくてふわふわの髪かみの毛けをしていて、エプロンには小麦こむぎの模様もようがついています。Mii had white, fluffy hair, and her apron had a wheat pattern on it.

「ここは、真夜中まよなかにだけ現あらわれるふしぎなパン屋やさんなの。毎晩まいばん、明日あしたの朝あさに届とどけるパンを作つくっているのよ」"This is a magical bakery that only appears at midnight. Every night, we make bread to deliver in the morning."

「すごいね。ぼくも手伝てつだっていい？」イチが聞きくと、ミイはうれしそうにうなずきました。"That's amazing! Can I help too?" When Ichi asked, Mii nodded happily.

「もちろん。一緒いっしょに作つくりましょう」"Of course. Let's make bread together."

イチはミイに教おしえてもらいながら、パン作つくりを始はじめました。粉こなをこねると、手てが白しろくなります。「ふふ、くまさんの手てが真っ白まっしろ」ミイがくすくすと笑わらいます。Ichi started making bread with Mii teaching him. When he kneaded the flour, his paws turned white. "Hehe, your paws are all white, little bear," Mii giggled.

次つぎに、こねた生地きじを丸まるく丸まるめていきます。「優やさしく、優やさしくね。パンは愛情あいじょうをたくさん入いれるとおいしくなるの」Next, they rolled the kneaded dough into round shapes. "Gently, gently. Bread becomes delicious when you put lots of love into it."

イチは心こころを込こめて、一ひとつ一ひとつ丁寧ていねいに丸まるめました。Ichi put his heart into it and carefully rolled each one.

オーブンに入いれると、パンは少すこしずつふくらんでいきます。そしてやがて、金色きんいろにこんがりと焼やけました。When they put the bread in the oven, it slowly puffed up. And soon, it was baked to a golden brown.

「できた！」イチは自分じぶんで作つくったパンを見みて、とてもうれしくなりました。丸まるくてふわふわの、すてきなパンです。"It's done!" Ichi was so happy looking at the bread he had made himself. It was a lovely, round, fluffy bread.

「このパン、明日あしたの朝あさ、誰だれかの朝あさご飯になるのよ。きっと幸しあわせな気き持もちになってくれるわ」ミイが優やさしく言いました。"This bread will become someone's breakfast tomorrow morning. I'm sure it will make them feel happy," Mii said gently.

「ぼくのパンを食たべた人ひとが、幸しあわせになるといいな」イチはパンをそっとなでました。"I hope whoever eats my bread will be happy," Ichi said, softly patting the bread.

その時じ、遠とおくからにわとりの鳴なく声こえが聞きこえてきました。もうすぐ朝あさです。Just then, they heard a rooster crowing in the distance. Morning was almost here.

「イチ、そろそろ帰かえる時じ間よ。また遊あそびにきてね」ミイはイチの手てに、小ちいさなパンを一ひとつ渡わたしました。「これはお友達ともだちのしるし」"Ichi, it's time to go home now. Come play again," Mii said, placing a small bread in Ichi's paw. "This is a sign of our friendship."

「ありがとう、ミイ。また来くるね」イチはパンを大事だいじに持もって、家いえに帰かえりました。"Thank you, Mii. I'll come again," said Ichi, carefully holding the bread as he went home.

ベッドに戻もどったイチは、またもとのぬいぐるみに戻もどっていきます。でも、手ての中なかには小ちいさなパンがしっかりと握にぎられていました。Back in bed, Ichi slowly returned to being a regular stuffed bear again. But in his paw, a small bread was still firmly held.

次つぎの朝あさ、女おんなの子こはイチの手てにある小ちいさなパンを見みつけて、ふしぎそうに首くびをかしげました。「これ、どこから来くたの？」The next morning, the girl found the small bread in Ichi's paw and tilted her head curiously. "Where did this come from?"

でも、イチは黙だまったまま、いつもより少すこしだけうれしそうな顔かおをしていました。But Ichi stayed quiet, looking just a little happier than usual.

あなたの家いえの近ちかくにも、もしかしたら真夜中まよなかのパン屋やさんがあるかもしれません。甘あまい匂においがしたら、それは小麦こむぎの精霊せいれいたちが働はたらいているしるし。There might be a midnight bakery near your house too. If you smell something sweet, that's the sign that the wheat spirits are working.
