ふるいとけいのなかのくにThe Kingdom Inside the Old Clock

森もりの奥おくに、大おおきな古ふるい時計台とけいだいがありました。その時計とけいは、もう長ながい間あいだ止とまったままでしたが、満月まんげつの夜よるだけ、不思議ふしぎな音おとを鳴ならすのです。Deep in the forest, there was a big old clock tower. The clock had stopped long ago, but only on full moon nights, it would make a mysterious sound.

小ちいさなちょうちょの精霊せいれい、チヒロは、その音おとが大好だいすきでした。きらきら光ひかる羽はねを持もった、優やさしい女おんなの子こです。A little butterfly spirit named Chihiro loved that sound. She was a gentle girl with sparkling wings.

ある満月まんげつの夜よる、チヒロがいつものように時計台とけいだいの近ちかくを飛とんでいると、時計とけいの中なかから柔やわらかな光ひかがもれてきました。One full moon night, while Chihiro was flying near the clock tower as usual, a soft light began to glow from inside the clock.

「あれ？　今日きょうはいつもと違ちがうな」"Huh? Something's different today."

チヒロは不思議ふしぎに思おもって、時計とけいの小ちいさな隙間すきまから中なかをのぞきこみました。Chihiro was curious and peeked through a small gap in the clock.

すると、金色きんいろに輝かがやく世界せかいが広ひろがっていたのです。大おおきな歯車はぐるまがゆっくりとまわり、小ちいさな歯車はぐるまがくるくると踊おどっています。She found a golden world spreading before her. Big gears turned slowly, and small gears danced around and around.

「わあ、きれい」"Wow, how beautiful!"

チヒロが思おもわず声こえを出だすと、時計とけいの中なかから小ちいさな声こえが聞きこえました。When Chihiro let out a gasp, she heard a small voice from inside the clock.

「誰だれかいるの？」"Is someone there?"

歯車はぐるまの影かげから、一人ひとりの男おとこの子こが顔かおを出だしました。銀色ぎんいろの髪かみの毛けに、星ほしの形かたちの目めをした不思議ふしぎな子こです。体からだは、透明とうめいな歯車はぐるまでできているように見みえました。From behind a gear, a boy appeared. He had silver hair and star-shaped eyes. His body looked like it was made of clear gears.

「こんばんは。私わたしはチヒロ。ちょうちょの精霊せいれいなの。あなたは誰だれ？」"Good evening. I'm Chihiro, a butterfly spirit. Who are you?"

「ぼくはオト。この時計とけいの中なかに住すんでいる、時ときの精霊せいれいだよ。よく来きたね、チヒロ」"I'm Oto. I'm a spirit of time who lives inside this clock. Welcome, Chihiro."

オトはにっこり笑わらって、チヒロを時計とけいの中なかへと招き入まねきいれました。Oto smiled and invited Chihiro inside the clock.

「この世界せかい、とっても不思議ふしぎ。歯車はぐるまがみんな動うごいているね」"This world is so magical. All the gears are moving!"

「この歯車はぐるまたちは、夢ゆめの時間じかんを作つくっているんだ。外そとの時計とけいは止とまっていても、中なかではずっと時間じかんが流ながれているんだよ」"These gears are making dream time. Even though the clock outside has stopped, time keeps flowing inside."

オトが優やさしく教おしえてくれました。Oto explained gently.

「夢ゆめの時間じかん？」"Dream time?"

「そう。みんなが眠ねむる夜よる、ここで作つくった時間じかんが、素敵すてきな夢ゆめになって届とどくんだ」"Yes. On nights when everyone sleeps, the time we make here becomes wonderful dreams and reaches them."

チヒロはびっくりしました。Chihiro was amazed.

「じゃあ、私わたしが見みる夢ゆめも、ここで作つくられているの？」"So the dreams I see are made here too?"

「うん。チヒロの夢ゆめもね。君きみの夢ゆめは、いつも花畑はなばたけを飛とんでいる夢ゆめでしょう？」"Yes. Your dreams too, Chihiro. Your dreams are always about flying through flower fields, right?"

「うん、そうだよ。どうして知しってるの？」"Yes, that's right! How did you know?"

「夢ゆめを作つくるとき、見みえるんだ。チヒロの夢ゆめは、とてもきれいな色いろをしているよ」"I can see them when I make dreams. Your dreams have such beautiful colors."

チヒロはうれしくなって、羽はねをふるふると震ふるわせました。Chihiro felt happy and fluttered her wings with joy.

「見みせてあげる。夢ゆめを作つくるところを」"Let me show you where dreams are made."

オトはチヒロの手てを取とって、時計とけいの奥おくへと案内あんないしました。Oto took Chihiro's hand and led her deeper into the clock.

そこには、大おおきな金色きんいろの振り子ふりこがありました。振り子ふりこが揺ゆれるたびに、きらきらした光ひかの粉こなが舞い上まいあがります。There was a big golden pendulum. Every time it swung, sparkling dust floated up into the air.

「この振り子ふりこが揺ゆれると、夢ゆめのかけらが生うまれるんだ。そして、この粉こなたちがみんなの枕元まくらもとへ飛とんでいくんだよ」"When this pendulum swings, dream pieces are born. Then this dust flies to everyone's pillows."

「すごい。こんな素敵すてきな場所ばしょがあったなんて」"Amazing! I never knew such a wonderful place existed."

チヒロはうっとりと振り子ふりこを見みつめました。光ひかの粉こなが、チヒロの羽はねにも降りそそいで、虹色にじいろに輝かがやきます。Chihiro gazed at the pendulum dreamily. The sparkling dust fell on her wings too, making them shimmer in rainbow colors.

「チヒロ、今日きょうは特別とくべつな日ひなんだ。満月まんげつの夜よるは、一番いちばん素敵すてきな夢ゆめを作つくれるんだよ」"Chihiro, today is a special day. On full moon nights, we can make the most wonderful dreams."

「特別とくべつな夢ゆめ？」"Special dreams?"

「うん。一緒いっしょに作つくってみる？」"Yes. Do you want to make some together?"

チヒロは大おおきくうなずきました。Chihiro nodded eagerly.

二人ふたりは、小ちいさな歯車はぐるまを回まわし始はじめました。くるくる、くるくる。歯車はぐるまが回まわるたびに、甘あまい香かおりが広ひろがります。The two began turning a small gear. Round and round. With each turn, a sweet fragrance filled the air.

「どんな夢ゆめにする？」"What kind of dream should we make?"

「お花はなとお星ほしさまがいっぱいの、温あたたかい夢ゆめがいいな」"I'd like a warm dream full of flowers and stars."

チヒロがそう言いうと、オトは優やさしくうなずきました。When Chihiro said this, Oto nodded gently.

「いいね。きっとみんな幸しあわせな気持きもちで目めが覚さめるよ」"That sounds lovely. Everyone will wake up feeling happy."

二人ふたりが心こころを込こめて歯車はぐるまを回まわすと、金色きんいろの光ひかがあふれ出だしました。その光ひかは、たくさんの小ちいさな星ほしになって、時計とけいの外そとへと飛とび出だしていきます。As the two turned the gear with all their hearts, golden light overflowed. The light became many little stars and flew out of the clock.

「行いってらっしゃい、夢ゆめの星ほしたち」"Safe travels, dream stars!"

オトがそっと手てを振ふりました。Oto waved gently.

「ありがとう、チヒロ。君きみのおかげで、とても素敵すてきな夢ゆめができたよ」"Thank you, Chihiro. Thanks to you, we made wonderful dreams."

「私わたしも楽たのしかった。オト、また遊あそびに来きてもいい？」"I had fun too. Oto, can I come visit again?"

「もちろん。満月まんげつの夜よるは、いつでも待まっているよ」"Of course. I'll always be waiting on full moon nights."

二人ふたりはにっこり笑わらいあいました。The two smiled at each other.

その時とき、外そとからにわとりの鳴き声なきごえが遠とおくに聞きこえました。もうすぐ朝あさが来きるのです。Just then, they heard a rooster crow far away. Morning was coming soon.

「チヒロ、そろそろ帰かえる時間じかんだね」"Chihiro, it's time to go home."

「うん。でも、また来きるね。約束やくそくだよ」"Okay. But I'll come again. It's a promise."

チヒロはオトに手てを振ふって、時計とけいの外そとへと飛とび出だしました。Chihiro waved goodbye to Oto and flew out of the clock.

森もりに帰かえる途中とちゅう、チヒロは空そらを見上みあげました。満月まんげつが優やさしく輝かがやいています。そして、さっき二人ふたりで作つくった夢ゆめの星ほしたちが、きらきらと夜空よぞらを駆かけていきました。On her way back to the forest, Chihiro looked up at the sky. The full moon was shining gently. And the dream stars they had made together were sparkling across the night sky.

「オト、またね」"See you again, Oto."

チヒロは小ちいさな声こえでつぶやいて、温あたたかいおうちへと帰かえりました。Chihiro whispered softly and flew back to her warm home.

さあ、君きみもお目め々を閉とじてね。今日きょうは、時計とけいの中なかのオトとチヒロが作つくった、特別とくべつな夢ゆめが届とどくよ。Now close your eyes too. Tonight, a special dream made by Oto and Chihiro inside the clock will reach you.

温あたたかいおふとんにくるまって、ゆっくりおやすみ。Snuggle up in your warm blanket and have a peaceful goodnight.
