The Umbrella Shop on the Night of Falling Stars
At the foot of a faraway mountain, there is a small town. Once every hundred years, a night comes to that town when the stars fall.
The stars come down quietly, like drops of rain. Being touched by one does not hurt. But anyone they touch falls asleep right where they stand.
So on that night alone, the people of the town go to borrow umbrellas. They go to the little umbrella shop at the edge of town.
Koyori works at that umbrella shop. No one in town could fold an umbrella as beautifully as Koyori could.
When evening came, a long line formed in front of the shop.
If you will be walking home late, please take this big one."
Koyori handed an umbrella to each person, one by one. When they opened with a soft snap, you could see thin silver cloth lining the inside. It was cloth that turns the stars away.
The old man from the vegetable stall, a mother holding her baby, an older brother heading out to his night work. Everyone took an umbrella and went home.
By the time the sky turned purple, only one umbrella was left in the shop.
Just then, a girl was standing in front of the shop. Her name was Ruri.
Ruri did not try to borrow an umbrella. She only looked up at the sky.
Don't you need an umbrella?" Koyori asked.
Even if a star touches me, I cannot fall asleep," said Ruri.
Ruri had been unable to sleep for a very long time. She said she walked through the town all night, watching the lights in the houses go out, one by one.
Koyori took the last umbrella and stepped outside the shop.
Then Koyori opened it above Ruri's head.
Stay here."
The two of them sat down side by side under the umbrella. Tap, tap, went the stars against the cloth.
The sound was like a faraway drum, and also like a quiet rain.
As Ruri listened to that sound, little by little she grew still.
Koyori tilted the umbrella, very gently. One grain of star fell onto Ruri's shoulder.
Ruri's eyes slowly closed. They were eyes that had not been able to close for a long, long time.
Koyori folded the umbrella. No one in town could fold one as quietly as Koyori could.
The stars were still falling softly. Koyori closed their eyes too, right beside Ruri.
It was a night when the town slept, and the mountain slept, and even the sky fell asleep.
May one grain of star fall onto your pillow tonight as well.
Good night.
