The Ferry on the River of Mist
Between one mountain and another, a river made of mist flows. There is not a single drop of water in it, yet the white mist alone drifts slowly toward the far side.
When night comes, a small ferry boat sets out on that river. The one who rows it is a child named Minamo. Only during the night, Minamo goes back and forth across this river.
The ones who ride in Minamo's boat are people who have forgotten where they were going. They are people who, on nights when they cannot sleep, somehow find themselves at this shore.
That evening, the one standing at the shore was a girl named Kureha. On her shoulders lay a thin dew of mist.
How far are you going?" Minamo asked.
Kureha thought for a while, then answered in a small voice. "I don't know. I can't remember where I want to go."
That's all right," said Minamo. "I'll keep rowing until you remember."
The boat left the shore quietly. As Minamo rowed, the mist parted softly in two, like cotton.
All sorts of sounds came drifting out of the mist. A bell ringing far away. Someone splitting firewood. A pot clinking as supper was made.
What was that just now?" Kureha asked.
This river gathers up all the night sounds of the town and carries them along," Minamo answered.
After they had rowed a while, one small light appeared through a gap in the mist. Kureha gazed at that light without looking away.
That light. I feel like I know it."
Without saying anything, Minamo turned the boat around. The boat moved gently toward the light.
One by one, Kureha began to remember. The creak of the front door. The sunny smell of a futon left out to dry. A voice saying, "Welcome home."
When they reached the shore, there stood a single house with its light on. Behind the window, someone was still awake, waiting.
Kureha stepped off the boat and turned back to Minamo. "Thank you."
Come again if you ever lose your way. The boat goes out every night."
Minamo rowed the boat alone, back into the mist. Splash, splash went the quiet sound, left behind on the water.
The river of mist is flowing slowly tonight as well, carrying someone who cannot sleep toward a shore where a light is burning.
Your boat has already reached the shore. The light in the window is still on.
Good night.
