The Night the Glass Trees Ring
In the middle of a sea of sand, a forest of glass grows only on the nights when the moon turns round. During the day there is nothing there but sand, with the tracks of the wind across it.
That night, a traveling girl who had crossed one tall dune saw something shining far away. Her name was Hibari. With a leather water pouch over her shoulder, she had been walking this sea of sand for three days.
When she came closer, she saw that it was a tree. The trunk, the branches, and the leaves were all made of clear glass. The moonlight passed through them and laid thin shadows on the sand.
When Hibari touched a leaf with her finger, it made a small sound, chirin.
That tree is made out of that very sound."
She looked toward the voice. At the foot of the tree sat a child about as tall as she was, wearing a coat the same color as the sand. The child said their name was Kagerou, and that they looked after the trees of this forest.
Every tree rings with a different sound."
When Kagerou flicked a branch with a finger, it made a round sound, koron. The tree beside it went ton, a low sound. The tree past that one made a sound that stretched out thin and long.
Why does it come for only one night?"
Because glass is no match for the heat of the day."
When the wind came through, the whole forest rang all at once. High sounds and low sounds layered over each other and sounded like a slow song. Hibari sat right down where she was.
Hibari took a small piece of glass from the bottom of her pouch. She had picked it up beside the village well on the day she set out, and she had carried it with her ever since.
Can this become a tree too?"
Kagerou took the piece, made a shallow hole in the sand, and buried it gently. Then, instead of water, they scooped up moonlight in their palms and poured it over.
The sand swelled, and one thin branch slipped up out of it. Hibari held her breath and waited, and the branch rang, small and soft, fuu. It sounded like the evening wind back in her village.
That is your sound," said Kagerou.
Hibari lay down beside that tree. The sand still held a little of the daytime warmth, and her back slowly went loose and easy.
The trees around her were ringing, one after another. Chirin, koron, ton, fuu. While she was counting them, she could no longer tell which was which.
Kagerou brushed the sand off Hibari's coat, and then slowly swayed the branch of the tree that rang the most quietly.
When morning comes, the glass forest melts into the light, and the sea of sand becomes an empty place once more. But on the next night when the moon turns round, Hibari's tree will ring with the very same sound.
Good night.
