The Night Inn Where Dreams Stay
At the very edge of night stands a small inn. It sleeps all through the day, and when the sun goes down, a little light comes on at its door. The guests who come to stay are dreams, on their way to someone.
The one who helps at the inn is a girl named Nazuna. She heats the water for the dreams, shows them to their rooms, and sees them off before the morning comes.
Dreams come in all sorts of shapes. A dream shaped like a goldfish. A dream that smells of snow. A dream made only of the sound of a faraway sea. Nazuna brings warm tea to every one of them, just the same.
One evening, a small dream was curled up in front of the door. On the ticket in its hand, no destination was written.
I do not know where I am supposed to go," said the little dream. Its name was Touka.
Nazuna gave Touka the quietest room of all. From the window, the lights of the houses below looked like faraway grains of sand.
There is nothing inside me yet. Who would ever wait for an empty dream?"
Nazuna thought for a moment. "If you are empty," she said, "then you can still become anything at all."
The two of them went down into the inn's garden. The smell of night dew. The color of the moon. The whistle of a train passing far away. The sound of grass swaying in the wind. Nazuna picked them up one by one and slipped them gently inside Touka.
Touka's body slowly turned clear and began to glow, ever so softly. Inside, a quiet scene was moving.
Is this the scene inside me?" Touka asked. "Yes. You are not empty anymore."
Just then, one of the lights below grew brighter. It was the sign of someone who could not fall asleep, someone waiting. On Touka's ticket, the letters of a destination rose up.
At the door, Touka gave Nazuna a small bow and flew off into the night. A single trail of glowing specks was left along the hallway.
The old innkeeper came up from behind. "You found it well," she said. "A destination is decided the moment a scene appears inside a dream."
Nazuna turned the door light down low and left some night dew on the grass in the garden, enough for the next evening. Tomorrow night, another dream with nowhere to go might come.
The inn falls quietly asleep. Outside the window, Touka's light is drifting down to the pillow of a child somewhere. Good night.
