The Lake of the Rain That Never Fell
At the very top of a mountain there is a small lake. Strangely, no rain ever falls on it. Instead, drops of rain that never managed to fall come down from the sky, one, and then another, very slowly. Yusura lived beside that lake, in a little hut.
Every drop that failed to fall carried a place it wanted to go. When Yusura set one on a palm and listened closely, the drop would tell in a tiny voice. "The corner of a dried-up field." "The top of a thirsty roof." "The roots of a tree that is longing for water." Then Yusura would set the drop in an old boat and carry it off into the night sky.
One night, a single drop came down that said nothing at all. Resting on Yusura's palm, it was a little warmer than the others, and a small light swayed inside it.
Where do you want to fall?" Yusura asked. The drop stayed quiet for a long while, and then said only one word. "Hisame." That was its name.
Yusura set Hisame in the boat and went all around the night town. The top of a thirsty roof. A sleeping field. The middle of an old well. But no matter what they came close to, Hisame's light only swayed weakly, and it never said it wanted to fall.
The edge of the sky was turning a little white. The old man who watched over the boats said quietly, "Some rain has no place to fall, you know. A drop like that waits all alone, way up high."
Yusura went back to the lake. Hisame was still just as warm, there on Yusura's palm. And then a thought came. Maybe the place Hisame wanted to fall was not a field or a roof at all.
Could it be that you wanted to land in someone's palm?" Hisame's light grew suddenly bright. "I was up high for such a long time," Hisame said. "I was waiting for the day when someone would catch me."
Yusura wrapped both hands around Hisame and breathed on them softly. Hisame slowly came undone, turned into a single drop, and fell from Yusura's palm into the lake. A small ring spread out, and when the ring reached the far edge of the lake, the whole water glowed quietly.
From that night on, every time a drop fell into this lake, one small ring spread across it. It is the ring of a night when someone was caught. Yusura opens the window of the hut, listens to that sound, and closes both eyes.
The one drop that came down from the sky today was caught safely too. Good night.
