The Stone Flower That Blooms Once in a Hundred Years
Higher than the clouds, there is a mountain made only of rock. On its very top, they said, a stone flower blooms once every hundred years, for one night only. Nonoka heard the story from her grandmother, and set off from the village at the foot of the mountain, all by herself.
The path was narrow, and in places it disappeared altogether. The wind was strong, crying beside her ears the whole way. One white bird flew a little ahead of Nonoka, and waited for her on the rocks.
In the evening, she saw a small stone hut near the top. Inside sat one old person, all alone. Their name was Tokiwa. "You have come a long, long way," said Tokiwa, and poured warm water into a little cup for her.
Tokiwa said that this was the place for waiting for the flower. "When I was a child, my grandfather told me about it. On the night the stone flower blooms, the whole mountain goes quiet. Ever since, I have waited here, every single night." Nonoka counted on her fingers. It was a very long time.
Night came. The sky was black, and the stars looked close. When the wind turned cold, Tokiwa put their own jacket over Nonoka's shoulders. The two of them sat down on the rock and waited side by side.
Where will the flower bloom?" Nonoka asked. Tokiwa shook their head. "I do not know. It makes no sound, and it gives only a little light. So let us each watch a different way." Nonoka watched the right side of the mountain, and Tokiwa watched the left.
The night grew deep. Nonoka's eyelids became heavy, and her head began to nod, again and again. "You may sleep," said Tokiwa. "If it blooms, I will wake you."
How long had passed? Someone tapped her shoulder gently, and Nonoka opened her eyes. The rock right in front of her was glowing faintly white. The stone flower was opening, without a single sound.
The petals were made of thin stone, and from inside them a light like snow was spilling out. The whole mountain was quiet. Even the wind had stopped. Tokiwa said nothing at all, and only gazed at that light.
When the edge of the sky grew bright, the petals slowly came undone and turned into a fine powder. The powder rode the wind and scattered all over the mountain. "That is the seed of the next hundred years," said Tokiwa.
Will you wait another hundred years?" Nonoka asked. Tokiwa smiled. "All the waiting has been a joy, you know. Every night, the sky was beautiful." And Nonoka thought that one day, perhaps, it would be her turn to wait.
On the path down, Nonoka looked back many times. The mountain had returned to being quiet rock. Even so, when she closed her eyes, the inside of her eyelids glowed a little white. Carrying that light with her, Nonoka went home to the village. Good night.
