The Mirror That Shows Nothing
Halfway up a narrow hill road, at the edge of town, there is a small shop. A wooden sign in the window says "Mirror Polishing," and inside, large mirrors and little mirrors stand quietly in rows.
Every time Nonoka passed the shop, she peeked in through the window. One evening the door was open just a crack, so she slipped quietly inside. At the back, an old man was polishing a mirror with a cloth.
Welcome," the old man said. Nonoka's eyes stopped on the mirror farthest back. All the other mirrors showed the ceiling, the lamp, and Nonoka's face too, but that one mirror showed nothing at all, as if a thin mist hung over it.
That one's name is Minamo," the old man said. "She is still learning how to reflect things."
A mirror, learning? Nonoka crouched down in front of it. Minamo's surface was like a quiet puddle, and no matter how she peered in, she could not see her own face.
This mirror does not show faces," the old man said. "Instead, one day it will show the place a person most wants to go home to. But it cannot learn unless someone talks to it."
From that day on, Nonoka stopped by the shop on her way home from school and talked to Minamo. How cold the wind had been that day. How the nut she found spun around just like a top. The mirror never answered, but its polished surface seemed to grow just a little warmer.
One night deep in autumn, Nonoka looked in and saw a small light glowing beyond the mist. The light of a window. A curtain she knew well. A bed with pillows lined up on it. It was Nonoka's own room.
You have found it," the old man said. "The place you most want to go home to."
Nonoka went home and burrowed into her futon. When she closed her eyes, the room seemed to shine softly, like a mirror polished until it gleamed. Behind her eyelids, Minamo was swaying gently. Good night.
