The Key That Fit Nowhere
Ever since Hinari was born, Hinari had carried one small key. It was an old golden key, small enough to rest in the palm of a hand. Nobody knew who had given it, or what door it belonged to, not even Hinari's father or mother.
Hinari tried every door in the house. The cupboard in the kitchen, the door of the shed, the back of the closet. None of them fit. Hinari went around to the neighbors' houses in the village too, but the key did not fit anywhere. After a while, the key was forgotten at the back of a dresser drawer.
One winter night, Hinari woke up to a faint sound. Ting, ting. It was coming from the back of the dresser drawer. When Hinari opened it, the key was trembling a little, and touching it made Hinari's fingers grow warm.
Hinari put on a coat and stepped quietly outside. The snow had just stopped, and the whole village lay sunk in blue. When the key pointed north it grew warm, and when it pointed any other way it turned cold. So Hinari walked toward the warmth.
Past the village, up the slope, all the way to the middle of an empty field, the key became as hot as it could be. There was no door there, and no wall either. Only Hinari's footprints, printed across the snow.
But looking closely, there in the empty air was a single thin vertical line. It looked like a light cut made in a sheet of paper. Coming nearer, Hinari found a tiny keyhole right in the middle of it.
When Hinari slid the key in and turned it, there was a small click. The line opened slowly, and warm light spilled out. Inside was one small room. Along the walls were shelves, and all sorts of things were arranged neatly on them.
A single glove without its pair. The bell from the collar of a cat that had gone away. A picture that had been torn. Everything that had ever been lost was there. Between the shelves sat someone called Yosuga, folding an old cloth.
This is a room where lost things are kept, so that they never have to feel lonely," Yosuga said quietly. "Can none of them ever go back?" Hinari asked. Yosuga shook their head. "When the one who lost them falls asleep, the things in this room go back into their dreams. So losing something does not mean you can never meet it again."
You may take one home, if you like," said Yosuga. Hinari walked slowly along the shelves, looking, and then shook their head. "Please let them all stay here. It is warm in this room." Yosuga nodded, and took the key from Hinari's hand.
When Hinari stepped outside, the line had already vanished. The field was white and still. Hinari followed those same footprints back home. Under the blanket, when Hinari closed both eyes, somewhere far away a single bell rang once. Good night.
