The Sand Whale and the Piece of Star
There is a sea of sand. Not a single drop of water is in it. White sand is pushed by the wind and rolls like waves. Across it, a small ship with its sail up glides quietly along.
Sitting at the front of the ship is a girl named Asagi. Her work is to listen to the sand. Where the sand is shallow it whispers softly, and where it is deep it rumbles low. The ship turns toward whichever way Asagi raises her hand.
One night, Asagi tilted her head to listen and could not move. A low, long sound that went on and on. And the sound came from the very same place, again and again. That was a rare thing on the sea of sand.
Asagi stopped the ship and stepped down onto the sand. As she walked, the sand at her feet rose up, then split in two, and a black back came floating out. It was a sand whale. It was far bigger than the ship, and yet it moved so gently.
Right in the middle of its back, a small light was stuck fast. It was a piece of a star. Long, long ago it had fallen from the sky and stayed there on the whale's back, they say. "Isn't it heavy?" asked Asagi. The whale blinked slowly.
Ever since the piece landed there, the sand whale could no longer dive deep. If it carried something shining down with it, the darkness at the bottom of the sand would be startled. So every night, the whale circled slowly around the very same spot.
Asagi climbed onto the whale's back and put her ear to the piece of star. A tiny voice came out of it. "I want to go home." That low sound was not the whale's voice at all. It was the piece of star, calling all this time.
Asagi went back to the ship and opened the sail as wide as it could go. The sail caught the wind, and the wind it caught carried the little voice up into the sky.
After a while, one star in the sky twinkled. Then the star beside it, and then the next one. Soon, from star to star, a thin ribbon of light joined together and came down softly onto the sea of sand.
The piece of star floated up the ribbon, as if it were being drawn home. On the sand whale's back, a round ring of light was left behind. The whale took one big breath, and then went down, far below, deeper and deeper.
The sand went back to its usual soft whisper. Asagi lay down beneath the sail, and while she listened to the ship gliding on, she closed her eyes. Good night.
