The Lighthouse That Lights Sounds
At the tip of a cape that reaches thin and far into the sea, an old lighthouse stands. In the room at the very top there is a great ring of glass, but its light has not been lit for a very long time.
Every year, when the evening wind turned soft and warm, Nagisa would climb that slope. The lighthouse door was always half open, and inside, the stairs curled upward like a spiral. Each time she climbed, her footsteps rolled up and up ahead of her.
In a corner of the room at the top, a little light the size of a palm sat all alone. The light had a small face. "My name is Isari," the child said. "I am the flame of this lighthouse." "Why don't you shine?" Nagisa asked.
I have forgotten how to shine," Isari said. "So instead, I light sounds now." When Isari opened a hand, the air in the room trembled, and from far away came the sound of a wave drawing back. It was much softer than a real wave.
On foggy nights, light cannot reach out over the sea," Isari said. "On nights like that, I give back a sound that the ship remembers. People can find their way home toward a sound they know."
After that, Nagisa often came to help. She lined up seashells on the windowsill to save the sound of the wind passing through, and she listened closely to gather the sounds drifting in from the harbor. The gathered sounds turned slowly inside the ring of glass.
One night, the whole sea sank into white fog. Far out, the shadow of a small boat went back and forth, back and forth. Isari searched the ring for sound after sound, but the sound of that boat was nowhere to be found.
「これでも いい?」Nagisa closed her eyes and thought. Then she remembered the sounds she herself knew. The sound of her mother stirring a pot in the kitchen. The sound of one wind chime ringing alone at the harbor. The low sound of the door of her house closing at night. "Would these do?"
Isari took the sounds gently and set them inside the ring. They spread out slowly across the top of the fog. After a while, the shadow of the boat turned and began to come straight toward them.
By the time the boat reached the harbor, the ring of glass was trembling with a pale golden light. Isari's face had grown a little brighter too. "I remember now," Isari said. "To shine means to remember someone's way home before they do."
Nagisa went down the slope and returned to her house. When she climbed into her futon and closed her eyes, a pale golden ring turned slowly behind her eyelids. The sound of the waves and the sound of the wind chime became one inside it, and spread far away, gently. Good night.
