The Pond That Cools the Sunset
Beyond the mountains there is a pond where the sunset is cooled. Nobody knows about it, but the reason the evening sky is so red is that a whole day of light is still hot. Unless that heat is gently cooled, the night cannot come.
A girl named Kureha lived beside the pond. Her job was to scoop up the sunset with a small ladle as the sun went down, and to soak it in the pond water. The sunset she scooped was thick like syrup, and just a little warm.
An old bird named Tobari lived at the pond. His feathers were the color of night, and his eyes the color of the moon. Tobari walked slowly across the water, gathered the cooled sunset on his wings, and carried it up to the sky. Cooled sunset turns into stars, Tobari said.
Every night, the two of them made the night this way. Kureha scooped, and Tobari carried. Along the edge of the pond, the smell of the cooled sunset stayed behind, faintly sweet.
One day, the sunset would not cool. The pond water stayed warm, and steam rose from it. "Did something happen today?" Kureha asked, and Tobari quietly tilted his head.
Someone does not want to go home yet."
When she looked, a small light was sinking at the bottom of the pond. It was a light left in the sky by a child from a faraway town, who was sad that playtime was over. A little longer, just a little longer, the light kept clinging to the evening.
Kureha put her hand into the water and lifted the light up gently. It was warm, and it trembled like a small heart. "Tomorrow, evening will come again," Kureha said in a small voice, and the light let go of its strength and grew cool.
Tobari spread his wings. The cooled light rolled across his feathers, rose into the night sky, and blinked softly at the very lowest place. That was a star born today.
The pond grew quiet, and beyond the mountains the sky turned deep blue. Kureha set the ladle down and closed her eyes. The night has come, just as it always does. Good night.
