The Bees That Gather Sleepiness
There is a meadow where the flowers bloom only at night. During the day, the flowers stay small and closed as buds, and nobody can find them. When the moon rises, the whole meadow opens up white, and a faintly sweet scent drifts into the air.
At the edge of the meadow, on a low hill, there is one small hive. Bees who gather nectar lived there. But what these bees gather is not the nectar of flowers. They gather the sleepiness that collects in the night flowers.
The one who watched over the hive was a girl named Wakana. Her job was to gently wipe the night dew from the wings of the bees when they came home with their gathering. If their wings stayed wet, the bees would not be able to fly.
Among the bees was the oldest bee of all, named Yae. Her wings were thin as paper, and the sound of her flying was quieter than the wind. Even so, Yae knew better than anyone which flower would open, and when.
One evening, the hive ran short of nectar. The flowers in the meadow were open, and yet only a little sleepiness had gathered. "What happened tonight?" asked Wakana, and Yae quietly trembled her wings.
In a far valley, there is one flower that has not opened yet. Until that flower opens, tonight's sleepiness will not be complete."
Wakana took a small jar and followed after Yae. The moonlight stretched out like a narrow path, and the two of them traced their way along it. The valley was wrapped in mist and perfectly still.
In the middle of the valley, one silver bud was closed up tight. "This flower will not open on a night when someone is worried," said Yae. Far away in the town, a child was still awake, thinking about tomorrow.
Wakana brought her face close to the bud and said in a small voice, "When tomorrow comes, the morning will come too. Until then, we will all be waiting here for you."
Then the bud slowly loosened, and silver petals opened. In its center, one drop of nectar had gathered, like dew. Yae scooped it up gently and moved it into Wakana's jar.
By the time they returned to the hive, the windows of the town were going dark, one after another. It was a sign that the sleepiness had reached them safely.
Yae folded her wings in the corner of the hive, and Wakana quietly closed the door. In the meadow, one more flower opens. In that sweet scent, the night grows deep. Good night.
