The Tree That Remembers Every Scent
On the very top of a mountain stands one great tree. That tree remembers every scent of the day. Inside each of its leaves, one scent is tucked away.
At the foot of the tree lived a girl named Nanoka. When night came, Nanoka would take her basket and walk among the branches. Her work was to gently set the scents the wind brought in onto the leaves that were still empty.
On a low branch sat an old bird named Tsugumi. Tsugumi could read the scents kept inside the leaves. "Today there is the smell of earth after rain. The smell of baked bread. The smell of sunshine in a quilt hung out to dry." "A lot came to us today too," said Nanoka, and Tsugumi quietly folded both wings.
「どうして、この はっぱだけ 白いの?」But that night, one leaf alone was pure white. It had no scent. Nanoka brought her nose close to it, but she could not smell anything at all. "Why is only this leaf white?"
Someone has forgotten a scent," said Tsugumi. "A forgotten scent loses its color."
Just then, a small light came climbing up the mountain path. It was an old woman carrying a paper lantern. She stopped at the foot of the tree and said with a troubled face, "I feel as though I have forgotten something important. But no matter how I try, I cannot remember what it was."
Nanoka gently picked the pure white leaf and placed it on the old woman's palm. Tsugumi spread both wings wide and stirred up a soft breeze.
From the leaf rose something thin, like smoke. It was a scent. Long ago, when the old woman was still small, it was the palm that had held her hand before she fell asleep. The sweet smell of orange peel.
The old woman closed her eyes and stayed still for a long while. Then she smiled quietly. "Yes. This was it." Slowly, the color came back to the leaf in her palm.
As the old woman walked back down the mountain, the tree swayed its branches wide. The scents of the whole mountain mixed into the night wind. The smell of rain, the smell of earth, someone's dinner cooking somewhere.
Nanoka sat down at the foot of the tree. Tsugumi was already closing both eyes on a branch right beside her. "I wonder if my scent is tucked away in one of these leaves too." The tree did not answer, but its leaves rustled once. Good night.
