Yukimaru and the Beginning Thread
Long, long ago, there was one great country that stretched from the snowy mountains in the north all the way to the sea in the south. In that country, winter was very long. Winter always came down from Mount Shizuri, far away at the northern edge.
When the snow clouds gathered above Mount Shizuri, the whole country turned white and went quiet.
That country had a custom from long ago. All through the winter, people turned spinning wheels in the huts up in the mountains. The sound of the turning wheels turned the winter, little by little, toward spring. That is what everyone believed.
The thread the mountain people spun was carried down to the great weaving hall in the capital, where it was woven into a single cloth called the Spring Robe. When the Spring Robe was finished, the snow clouds over Mount Shizuri slowly lifted, and that year's spring arrived.
The very first thread strung on the loom had to be thread spun in the northernmost hut of all. People called it the Beginning Thread.
In that northernmost hut lived an old woman named Orin, all by herself.
Long ago there had been several huts nearby, and on winter nights the sound of spinning wheels, creak, creak, could be heard from here and there. But now no one was left. In the deep snow at the northern edge, Orin was the only one still turning a wheel.
Even so, Orin lit her lamp every night and turned her spinning wheel. Creak, creak. Slowly, without resting.
One night, through a small hole in the paper door, two round eyes were watching her quietly.
It was a raccoon dog, a young one, with a white stripe like snow running across his nose. His name was Yukimaru.
Orin noticed him, but she pretended not to and kept on spinning. The eyes beyond the hole did not move at all.
The next night, and the night after that, Yukimaru came again. Beyond the paper door, he turned his front paws round and round. He was copying the spinning wheel.
Orin laughed without making a sound. And she left the little hole in the door just as it was.
Yukimaru had a reason for watching. The animals of the mountain suffered in a long winter too. The later the Spring Robe was finished, the longer they all went hungry.
If only I could spin thread too," Yukimaru murmured on the snow. But a raccoon dog's front paws were far too thick to pinch a thread.
Around that time, down in the village at the foot of the mountain, traps had been set for wild animals. The villagers had placed them at the mountain path because their fields kept getting trampled.
One morning at the start of winter, when Orin went out to draw water, she found Yukimaru caught in the vines down in the valley, unable to move.
With freezing fingers, Orin untied the vines. "Quick now, run along." Yukimaru looked back just once, then disappeared into a swirl of snow.
A month went by. That year's winter was not like other winters. The snow clouds over Mount Shizuri churned black and came sinking straight down.
The sky seemed to hang just above the roof of the hut. Every sound on the mountain disappeared. No creaking trees, no wind, no birdcalls. Only a hushed whiteness, stretching on and on.
In the village, one of the elders said quietly, "If the wheels stop on the night that cloud comes down, winter will never turn again."
That night, Orin sat down in front of her spinning wheel. But her hands were so numb with cold that she could not turn it.
She tried again and again, but it was no use. Orin thought of the Beginning Thread and closed her eyes tight. The spring of a whole country rested on this one small hut.
Just then, far away, there came a sound. Creak. Orin lifted her face. Another one. Creak. And another. Creak.
The sounds were coming from all over the mountain. From the empty huts. In every old hut buried in snow, huts where no one should have been left at all, a light was burning.
It was the raccoon dogs. Dozens and dozens of them sat before the old spinning wheels, turning them round and round with their front paws.
At the front of them all was Yukimaru. Every night since that first one, he had been teaching the whole mountain what he had learned by watching through the hole in the paper door.
Their paws were thick, and the thread they spun came out lumpy, thick in one place and thin in another. Even so, every wheel on the mountain kept turning together.
Creak, creak, creak. The sound spread out beneath the snow clouds and gently pushed the winter, which had almost stopped, into motion once more.
In the morning, the snow had stopped. When Orin opened her door, bundles of thread were piled up in front of the hut like a little mountain.
And from there, a single thin line of thread ran across the snow, down and down toward the foot of the mountain. It was so the way to the capital could be found even if the snow swallowed the road, a road of thread the raccoon dogs had run down all through the night.
The villagers followed the thread up the mountain. They found the lights in the empty huts, and the small footprints in the snow. No one said a word. Quietly, they took away their traps, and they never set them on the mountain again.
「こんな糸で、はるぎぬがおれるだろうか?」The Beginning Thread reached the capital. It was that lumpy thread Yukimaru had spun. At first the weavers tilted their heads and wondered, "Can a Spring Robe really be woven from thread like this?"
But the Spring Robe they wove that year turned out to be the warmest one there had ever been. In the gaps of that uneven thread, a great deal of soft air was held.
The snow clouds over Mount Shizuri lifted slowly away, and spring came to the whole country. From then on, at the start of every winter, the villagers sent one spinning wheel up the mountain. People and raccoon dogs turned the winter together.
In the paper door of Orin's hut, the little hole is still there. She never mends it. Tonight too, the wheel is turning, creak, creak. And beyond the hole, two round eyes.
Winter is turning, just as it should. Spring is almost here. Sleep well now. Good night.
