Mami and the Lights of Dark Slope
Long, long ago, there was a great road that ran all the way from the northern sea to the southern sea, straight through three countries. It climbed over mountains, crossed rivers, joined villages and towns, and went on and on. The people of the three countries used this road to carry rice, cloth, and precious letters to one another. But right in the middle of that road there was one place where nobody walked once the sun went down. It was a long, dim slope with tall pine trees on both sides. People called it Dark Slope.
At the bottom of Dark Slope stood one small tea house, all by itself. An old man who sold noodles lived there with his granddaughter, Sayori. Sayori was very good at remembering faces. If a traveler had stopped at the tea house even once, years later she could still say, "Ah, you are the one with the red cord on your hat." "A face," her grandfather always said through the steam of the noodles, "is the road a person has walked."
One night, Sayori asked her grandfather, "Why is everyone so afraid of Dark Slope?" The old man sat down again beside the fire and began to speak slowly. "A mujina has lived on that slope since long ago. But that mujina is not one who frightens people. It is the one who quietly brings back the things travelers drop. A hairpin, a little bell, an important letter."
But when it calls out from the top of the slope to give them back, the traveler turns around, cries out, and runs away. They say, it has no face, the faceless one has come." The old man stroked his own face slowly with his wrinkled hand. "Here is what I think. That mujina did not have an empty face from the beginning. Not one person ever looked straight at it, so it forgot what its own face looked like." Every time Sayori heard this story, something deep in her chest grew very quiet.
That autumn, the rumor about Dark Slope spread through all three countries. Travelers hurried to cross the slope before dark, and soon no one crossed it at all. The carts stopped, the letters stopped, and the healing herbs of the northern country never reached the sick people waiting in the southern country. At last an officer came from the capital and decided this. "Dark Slope will be closed. We will build a new road that goes all the way around the mountain." From that day a rope was tied across the entrance of the slope, and no one came to the tea house anymore.
「あなたは、まいごなのですか?」But Sayori did not give up. At dusk she took one lantern, slipped under the rope, and climbed the slope. Between the pines stood a woman in a white kimono, covering her face with her sleeve, crying. "What is the matter?" Sayori asked. The woman turned around slowly. On her face there were no eyes, no nose, no mouth. It was smooth and white, like an egg. Sayori caught her breath. But she did not run away. "Are you lost?"
The woman's shape came undone in the wind and vanished. The next night, Sayori carried warm noodles up the slope again. This time a traveler in a straw hat was standing there. The night after that, an officer in fine clothes. The night after that, an old woman with a bent back. The shape was always different, but the face was always the same smooth white. And then Sayori understood. This one only knows how people look from behind. Everybody runs away, so no one has ever shown it a face.
After that, every night, Sayori sat at the top of the slope holding her lantern just below her own face. "This is a laughing face. This is a troubled face. This is a sleepy face." A little way off, the mujina watched without moving. One night a tiny, tiny voice, like leaves rubbing together, said, "Where is my face?" Sayori looked straight at that white face and answered, "I will look for it together with you."
It happened on a night of hard rain at the end of autumn. At the worksite of the new road around the mountain, earth loosened by the rain slid down and blocked the valley path. Officers going home to the capital and travelers carrying healing herbs were trapped on Dark Slope with nowhere to go. The fog was deep, the lanterns went out one after another, and no one could see a single step ahead. The valley was right there. Then, between the pines, a pale blue light floated up. Beneath the light was a white shape with no face. "It is here." "The faceless one." The people cried out and backed toward the cliff.
Please do not run away." Sayori came running from the tea house and called out in the rain. "This one knows this slope better than anyone. This one has been bringing back the things you forgot, all this time." The slope grew still. The white shape gently lifted the light up high. Then it began to walk. Little by little, the people followed that light. Between the pines, one pale blue light appeared, then another, until the whole slope shone like a river of stars. Not one person stumbled, not one person fell into the valley, and everyone reached the tea house at the bottom safe and well.
Night ended and the rain stopped. For the first time, the people stood face to face with the white shape. The one with no face stepped back shyly. Then the oldest officer bowed very, very deeply. "Thank you." The travelers bowed too, one after another. No one ran away. No one cried out. Everyone looked straight at that face.
When the officer returned to the capital, he stopped the closing of Dark Slope. Lanterns were lined up on both sides, so travelers could pass even at night. And Sayori quietly gave the white shape a name. "How would the name Mami be?" When that name was called, two eyes slowly appeared on the white face, then a nose, and then a soft mouth. It was no one else's face. It was Mami's own first smile.
After that, the three countries were joined into one again. Dark Slope came to be called Mami Slope, and at night the light of the lanterns goes swaying up the hill. Even now, if you leave something behind on the slope, the next morning it is sitting neatly on the porch of the tea house. If someone ever seems frightening to you, try looking straight at their face, just once. Perhaps the one you thought was frightening has been waiting, for a long, long time, for someone to look. Now close your eyes, think of the lights on Mami Slope, and sleep well. Good night.
