The Mountain Wind and the Bamboo Flute
Long, long ago there was a great country with the sea to the south and high mountains blocking the north. The sea gave plenty of fish and the fields gave plenty of barley. It was a rich country. But once every three years, when autumn came, a tremendous wind came roaring down from the very top of the northern mountain. That wind tore the roofs off houses, turned boats upside down, and flattened the barley that had only just ripened with a single stroke. People called it the mountain wind, and they feared it greatly.
In a village on the shore of that country there lived a boy named Hikoichi. His father had died when he was little, and he and his mother lived together, just the two of them. Hikoichi was small in body, but his mind was the quickest in the whole country. One day the lord of the land came down to the beach and teased him. "Hikoichi, how much would it cost to buy this sea?" Hikoichi smiled and answered, "I will measure it out for you and tell you at once. But first, please stop every river in the country for about three days, so that no river water gets mixed in." The lord laughed until he held his sides, and from then on, whenever there was trouble, he sent for Hikoichi.
In that village there was an old story his mother often told him before he went to sleep. About a hundred years ago, they said, there lived in this village a girl named Tamaki who played the flute beautifully. Every evening Tamaki sat on the shore and played. Her music crossed the valleys and reached all the way to the top of the mountain. But one autumn day, Tamaki took her flute and climbed the mountain, and she came back down at dusk with a pale face, and after that she never played on the shore again. And from that very year, the mountain wind began to blow.
「母さん、あのたまきのふえを、かしてくださいませんか?」The year Hikoichi turned ten, the mountain wind raged worse than it ever had before. Half the roofs in the village blew away, and three boats were carried out to the open sea. The lord sent a thousand soldiers up the mountain, but halfway up they were all pushed back by the wind. At last a proclamation went out. "Whoever calms the mountain wind may ask for anything they wish." The only one who stepped forward was Hikoichi. His mother tried to stop him, but Hikoichi said, "Mother, would you lend me Tamaki's flute?"
Hikoichi tucked Tamaki's bamboo flute inside his robe, and he polished a thick bamboo tube and carried that along too. As he climbed the mountain path, a small tengu with wings peeked out at him from behind a rock. Hikoichi held the tube up to his eye and cried out grandly, "Oh, I can see it, I can see it. I can see the festival in the capital. I can see a ship sailing a thousand miles away." The little tengu could not bear it and came flying out. "Give that to me." "I cannot. It is my family's treasure." "Then trade it for this cloak of hiding. Put it on and your body disappears." Hikoichi made a very reluctant face, and nodded.
The moment he put on the cloak, Hikoichi's body vanished. He climbed on through the wind all the way to the summit. There sat a tengu so huge that he could be mistaken for a rocky mountain. Black wings on his back, a red nose on his face, and in both hands, enormous fans. The tengu's ears were even larger than the fans, opened wide and turned toward the wind. The tengu was talking to himself. "It is quiet. It is far too quiet." And each time he said it he waved his fans and raised a wind that groaned.
Hikoichi's legs shook. Even so, he took off the cloak and gave his name clearly. "I am Hikoichi, from the village on the shore. I got this cloak by tricking your tengu child. I have come to give it back." The tengu's eyes flew open. "A human? How dare you come this far." One swing of the great fan, and Hikoichi's body was almost blown away like a ball. He clung to a rock, shut his eyes, put the flute from his robe to his lips, and blew one phrase his mother had taught him, with all his strength.
The wind stopped dead. The tengu held his fans still and did not move, as though he had turned to stone. At last he spoke in a low voice that seemed to rumble up from deep in the ground. "Where did you learn that phrase?" Hikoichi answered honestly. "My mother taught me. It is the flute of a girl named Tamaki, from a hundred years ago." The tengu's great shoulders slowly came down.
My ears can hear a sound a thousand miles away," said the tengu. "A hundred years ago, every evening, the sound of a flute came climbing up from the foot of this mountain. It rode on a wind that smelled of fish and came straight up to me. I would wait impatiently for the sun to set so that I could listen to it. Then one autumn day, the one who played it came up this mountain. The girl said, 'Could you hear my flute?'" The tengu turned his face away as if he were ashamed. "I was so happy that I did not know what to say. So I looked the other way. The girl was frightened, and she went back down the mountain. And after that, the flute never came again."
I failed to say thank you," the tengu went on, hanging his head. "For a hundred years after that, I waited and waited, and that sound never came. For someone who is waiting, silence is the heaviest thing there is. To stop up my ears, I raised a wind myself. I thought that if there was the sound of wind, I would not have to wait." Hikoichi caught his breath. "Then what was that great wind?" "It was me covering my ears." The tengu looked out at the far sea. "And that wind was breaking the houses down below. I was pretending not to hear it."
Hikoichi thought for a while, and then said, "Great tengu, I have one request. Sound rides upon the wind. For these hundred years the wind has always blown down from the mountain to the sea. That is why the sounds of the village could never climb up this far." The tengu's ears twitched. "Please turn the wind the other way around. Do not fan outward, but draw inward, as if you were breathing in. Then every sound in the country will gather here on this mountain."
Hikoichi ran down the mountain and came before the lord, and this is what he asked. "On the night of the full moon, as soon as the sun goes down, please have everyone in the country make a sound all together. A flute, a drum, the lid of a pot, a lullaby, anything at all." The lord tilted his head, but it was Hikoichi who said it. The proclamation went out through the whole country. In the villages by the sea, in the hamlets among the mountains, and in the town below the castle, rows of people waited for that night with restless, excited faces.
The night of the full moon came. On the mountaintop Hikoichi swung a torch three times in a great circle. The tengu closed his eyes and slowly drew both fans toward himself. And the wind that until then had flowed from the mountain to the sea stopped short, changed direction, and began to blow up from the sea to the mountain. Up every valley the sounds came climbing. The flutes of children, the striking of pot lids, the songs of sailors, a baby crying, the drum of the faraway castle, and lullabies, many and many of them, drifting out of houses here and there. All of it was loosened by the wind and twisted together into one great sound, and it reached the tengu's ears.
The tengu listened for a long, long time. Then he said quietly, "It has been a hundred years." From his great eyes, tears like raindrops fell onto the rock. Hikoichi folded the cloak of hiding and set it down at the tengu's feet. "I am giving this back. I cannot carry home something I got by tricking someone." The tengu smiled at such honesty. "Then in its place I will give you one sweep of my fan. From now on, the autumn wind will blow only in the direction that carries boats home."
From that year on, the mountain wind stopped. When autumn came, all that came down from the mountain was a gentle breeze, just strong enough to stroke the ears of barley. Boats out at sea were pushed along by it and could reach the harbor while the sky was still bright. As he had promised, the lord asked Hikoichi what he wished for. Hikoichi asked for neither gold nor rice, but said this. "One bamboo flute for every child in the country." That wish was granted before the year was out.
Even today, in that country, when an autumn evening comes, people gather on the shore and play their flutes. The children lean against the knees of the grown-ups sitting cross-legged, and play along in imitation. The wind carries the sound slowly from the sea to the mountain. On the mountaintop, a great tengu closes his eyes and listens. He does not have to wait anymore. Somewhere near you too, someone's quiet song is surely reaching you right now. Breathe slowly, and good night.
