The Ogre Who Waited for Spring
Long, long ago, all the winter in the world was born from the breath of a single ogre. Deep in the mountains at the far north, higher than the clouds, there lived an ogre named Narukami. When Narukami breathed out a long breath, that wind crossed the fields and crossed the seas, scattered the leaves from every tree in the world, and froze every river.
In a village at the foot of a mountain there lived a girl named Hatsuse. Her mother had gone far away when Hatsuse was still very small, leaving her only one small comb carved from cherry wood. Every morning Hatsuse combed her hair with that comb before going out to draw water.
In Hatsuse's house there also lived the mother who had come later, and that mother's daughter. The mother who had come later always turned her back on Hatsuse and looked only at her own daughter. That daughter had a weak body, and in winter she coughed and could not get up from her bed.
But that year, the winter would not end, no matter how long they waited. March passed, April passed, yet the snow did not stop, and nowhere in the world did a flower bloom. The ice on the sea grew thicker day by day, and the village rice storehouse grew lighter and lighter until you could see its floor.
One day a traveler passing through the village said, "Deep in the mountains at the far north there is a tiny ember called the fire of spring. If the ogre would share it with you, spring would come back to the world. But not one person who has gone to that mountain has ever come home."
That night, the mother who had come later shook Hatsuse awake. "Go to the mountain and bring back the fire of spring." She gave her a thin coat and a single rice ball, and while it was still dark she sent Hatsuse out through the door. In the back room, her daughter's thin cough went on and on.
The snow on the road came up to Hatsuse's chest. After walking a while, she found several little birds huddled together and shivering at the roots of a tree beside the path. Hatsuse broke her rice ball apart and shared it among them all. For herself she took a pinch of snow into her mouth, and that was all.
A little farther on, a fox cub had fallen into a hole in the snow and could not climb out. Hatsuse took off her thin coat, twisted it like a rope, and pulled the cub up. The little fox looked straight into Hatsuse's face, then ran off toward the white mountain.
The sun went down, and as she went deeper into the mountain everything grew suddenly quiet. The trees shone white with ice, icicles hung in rows like fangs, and far away the wind was groaning. On the snow, footprints taller than Hatsuse herself went on, one after another after another.
何をしに来た?」At the end of the footprints stood a great gate made of stone. When Hatsuse stepped inside, in the far end of a hall with a very high ceiling, a shadow as big as a mountain moved slowly. A low voice came rumbling up from under the earth. "A human child. What have you come for?"
Hatsuse stood on trembling legs and answered. "Please share just a little of the fire of spring. My sister has been coughing all winter long. And the flowers of the whole world still cannot bloom." The shadow spoke quietly. "Spring will never leave this mountain again. Go home."
Even so, Hatsuse did not go home. In the corner of the hall she had seen a withered cherry tree standing in a pot. And she had noticed that the ogre's long hair was frozen stiff with ice, and had not been combed for many years.
May I comb your hair?" Hatsuse took out her mother's comb, a small comb carved from cherry wood. The moment the ogre saw that comb, its huge body went still as stone.
Where did you get that comb?" For the first time, Narukami's voice trembled. "Long ago, a girl lost her way and came to this mountain. She was not afraid of me. She combed my hair, and she shared half of the food she carried. When she left, she planted a cherry branch here and said, when this blooms, I will come again."
But that girl never came back. Narukami waited. One year, two years, ten years. Then one winter, Narukami understood something. If spring came, it would become certain that she was never coming. So Narukami drew in one great breath and held it, and shut spring away inside the mountain.
Hatsuse held the comb gently against her chest and said, "That person was my mother. She always told me that the ogre of the mountain was kind." From the ogre's great eyes, drops began to fall. Drop by drop they fell at the roots of the withered cherry tree.
Then, at the tips of the withered branches, pale pink buds began to swell, one and then another. In that dark hall, the cherry tree bloomed. At the same moment the whole mountain gave a great roar. The breath held inside for ten long years was about to come rushing out.
Please let that breath out slowly." Hatsuse put her hand on the ogre's hand as she spoke. Narukami closed its eyes and breathed out, thin and long. That wind was no longer cold. It crossed the mountains, crossed the fields, crossed the sea, and slowly unlocked all the ice in the world.
The rivers began to run with a sound, the sea ice cracked open and blue water spread wide, and every tree everywhere put out buds all at once. Narukami placed a tiny ember in a bamboo tube and put it into Hatsuse's hands. "This is the fire of spring. Take it with you. And please, come again."
On the way home, the little birds flew ahead to show her the path, and the fox cub chose the places where the snow was thin. When she reached the entrance of the village, though it was still dark, she saw one lamp burning at the door of her house.
The mother who had come later was standing there with snow piled on her shoulders. "I am sorry." She put her hands to the ground before Hatsuse and said, "I was afraid. Afraid that winter would never end, and that my own child would grow weaker and weaker. So I kept myself from looking at your face." Hatsuse wrapped that cold hand in both of her own.
When the fire of spring was moved into the fire pot, the house slowly grew warm, and by the end of that day her sister's cough had settled. Before long the late spring spread all at once over the village, over the country, over the whole world, and that year, they say, the flowers in every land bloomed longer than ever before.
From then on, at the beginning of every spring, a warm wind came down from the northern mountain and left a single cherry petal on Hatsuse's windowsill. It was a message telling her that the ogre deep in the mountain was well.
Tonight too, on the northern mountain, the great ogre is sleeping quietly beside the cherry tree. May a soft, warm wind pass by your window as well. Good night.
