The Two Who Hung Lights in the Sky
Long, long ago, there was a land where the night sky held no moon and no stars at all. When the sun went down, the whole world turned dark from corner to corner, and the people shut their doors and held small lamps close, waiting for morning.
On the highest mountain of that land, a great fire was always burning. Everyone in the land got through the night with only that fire to guide them. The family who kept it from going out were called the Fire Keepers.
In the Fire Keepers' house lived a father and his two daughters. The elder, Kagari, was good at tending the fire, and she could read the wind to know just when to add more wood. The younger, Urara, was good at singing, and when the fire heard her song, it swayed and burned happily.
Their mother had gone far away long before. Before she went, she left them these words. When the dark night frightens you, hold each other's hand. The warmth of a palm is the one thing no darkness can ever put out.
One year, the father came home from the capital with a new mother. The new mother never smiled. More than that, she would never once look toward the fire on the mountain.
When the sun set, the new mother shut the door tight and sat very still at the back of the house. Do not go near the fire. That was all she said to the two of them, day after day after day.
But the two girls knew something. In the middle of the night, the new mother would quietly peek outside through a crack in the door. Her eyes looked as if they were searching for something. She seemed frightened, and she seemed to be waiting, both at the same time.
That autumn, something strange began all across the land. The nights were growing longer, little by little. Tonight was longer than last night, and tomorrow night would be longer still. Morning came later with every passing day.
The people called those long nights the Yonaga, the endless dark. During the Yonaga, footsteps that made no sound passed along the roads. When you turned around, no one was there. And yet you would feel someone's breath on the back of your neck.
The great fire on the mountain grew thin and pale blue. The lamps in every house grew thin too, as if something were drinking them up. And at last, one after another, the people fell asleep and would not wake, no matter how loudly they were called. The father fell asleep beside the fire as well.
The only ones still awake were Kagari and Urara. The two of them had been holding hands all along, just as their mother had told them. Only their joined palms stayed gently warm.
In the Fire Keepers' house there was an old story. Once every hundred years, on the longest night of all, a ladder of light comes down from the sky. If someone climbs all the way up and hangs a light in the sky, the nights of this land will never be pitch dark again.
But, the old story went on, whoever climbs up can never come back down.
Kagari took hold of Urara's hand again. Let's go. Urara gave a small nod. They laid a blanket over their sleeping father and started up the mountain road.
The road was dark, and a thin breath of wind blew between the trees. Urara said in a small voice, Sister, someone is behind us. When Kagari turned around, something in the darkness stopped still.
The one who had followed them was the new mother. Out of breath, she caught them both by the arms. You must not go. That ladder, above all, you must not climb.
But why? asked Kagari. And for the first time, the new mother cried. Then she began to tell them. Long ago, on a Yonaga night, I went up this mountain too. I was still a child, about as old as you are now.
In the pitch dark, I was holding my own mother's hand. But I was frightened, so very frightened, that before I knew it I had let go. I never saw her again. That is why the night frightens me. Whenever I see a fire, I remember that night.
That is why I kept you away from the fire. I spoke coldly to you, but not because I disliked you. It was because I never wanted to let go of anyone's hand again.
Kagari took the new mother's hand. Then all we have to do is never let go. Urara laid her own hand on top of theirs. Three palms became one single warmth.
Just then, the clouds slowly parted, and a white ladder came down from the sky. It was a ladder made of light. When they stepped on it, it felt faintly warm, and it rang softly under their feet.
All three of them tried to climb, but the ladder let the new mother's feet slip right off it. Only those who did not fear the night could climb. The new mother sank down to her knees on the ground.
Kagari said, We will climb up and hang lights in the sky. Then the night will not be frightening anymore. Mother, please stay here and keep the fire. Just knowing you are watching from below is enough to keep our hands warm.
The two of them climbed the ladder. The higher they went, the smaller the land below became, until every roof in the land could have rested on a palm. Even so, the two never let go of each other's hands.
When they reached the very top, the two noticed that their own bodies had turned into lights. Kagari, the elder, became a big round light. Urara, the younger, became a small twinkling light.
When the two of them rose into the sky, a soft glow spread across the dark night. Then all the shadows of the Yonaga, who had been lost on the roads, lifted their faces at once. The shadows had not been doing anything wicked. There had simply been no light, and they could not find their way home.
Following the light of the moon and the star, the shadows went home over the mountain. The long, long night ended, morning came for the first time in ages, and all the people of the land woke up together.
After that, in the Fire Keepers' house, the new mother lit the mountain fire every single night. She was not afraid of fire anymore. Each time she lit it, the big light and the small light in the sky twinkled back, as if they were answering her.
On nights when moonlight came in through the window, the new mother would gently hold her palm out to it. And that light was warm, softly warm, just like a hand holding hers.
Tonight, too, a big light and a small light are floating side by side in the sky. Those are the two who never let go. Before you fall asleep, look out the window, and if the moon and the star are side by side, remember that someone is gently holding your hand. Goodnight.
