Four Hands and One Gourd
Long, long ago, at the far edge of a northern land, there stood a mountain so tall it seemed to touch the sky. At its foot lived two brothers. The elder was called Yuzuru, and the younger was called Amane. Their father and mother had both died when the boys were small, and all that was left to them was a leaning little hut, one small field, and a small gourd their father had treasured.
Just before he died, their father took both their hands and said, "This gourd is empty in the hands of one. Held by two pairs of hands, it will never break." The elder brother thought, I could hold it by myself. The younger brother said nothing, and quietly kept the words in his heart. They heard the very same words, yet what each of them carried away was so very different.
Many years went by, and the elder brother became the hardest worker in all the northern land. He went out to the fields while the stars were still shining, and came home only after the moon had risen. In time he built a great storehouse. Rice and beans were packed inside it right up to the ceiling. But he never once opened its door. Open it and it grows less, and growing less frightened him. Whenever he thought of that, his hand tightened around the key.
The younger brother, meanwhile, still had only his one little field. He shared the potatoes he grew with travellers, carried seeds to the next village, and in the end had nothing left to eat himself, so there were days he drank water and went to sleep. Even so, he walked the mountain paths humming a tune, with their father's gourd hanging at his waist.
One year, at the close of the year, a cold that nobody had ever known came to the northern land. Snow fell for three days and three nights, the roads vanished, and the river turned into a plank of ice. The villagers gathered in front of the elder brother's storehouse and knocked on the door. "Could you share just one handful of rice?" But the door did not open. From inside came only the sound of a key being turned.
At last the people came to the younger brother's hut. In his hands there was only half a bowl of rice left. He poured it into the gourd and, out in the snow, tipped it gently. And then a wonderful thing happened. From the mouth of the gourd came warm porridge, steaming white, more and more and more.
The porridge filled the bowls, filled the buckets, and filled the stomachs of everyone in the village. And still the gourd did not grow any lighter. Wondering at this, the younger brother looked into the bottom of the gourd, and there, in his father's writing, small words were carved. "It gathers only in an open hand." Only in an open hand. That night, for the very first time, he understood what his father's words had meant.
The story of the gourd spread faster than the wind. It crossed the mountain passes, crossed the valleys, and reached all the way to the capital. And it reached the elder brother's ears as well. Still gripping his key, he sat alone in his dark storehouse and thought. That gourd belonged to our father to begin with. With it, I could build another storehouse.
On a night of deep snow, the elder brother opened the door of his brother's hut. When the younger brother saw his face, he stood up gladly. "Brother, it has been so long. Will you have some porridge?" The elder brother pretended not to hear. He snatched the gourd from the wooden floor and ran straight out into the snow.
As he climbed the mountain path, he tipped the gourd again and again. Come out, rice. Come out, gold. But all that came out was cold wind. Each time a thin sound whistled from the mouth of the gourd, the snow around him swirled up, and the moon hid behind the clouds. His clenched hand would not open, as if it had frozen shut.
At the very top of the pass there was a great crack in the rock. The people of the northern land called it the Wind Hole, and never went near it. In his anger, the elder brother said, I have no use for something like this, and threw the gourd down into the crack. Clink, clink, it sounded as it fell away into the dark below.
At that very moment, a roaring wind came rushing up out of the earth. It was as if every winter there had ever been had been gathered into one. The snow blew sideways, every tree bent low, and mountain and valley alike sank into white cloud. Standing on the pass, the elder brother lost his footing in that wind, and sat down at the edge of the crack, unable to move.
Down at the foot of the mountain, the younger brother was looking up at the sky. The snow clouds were passing over the northern land, on to the country next door, and out to the sea beyond, spreading on and on. If this goes on, spring will never come to the whole world, he thought. And though everyone told him not to go, he put on his one straw cape and began to climb.
He sank into the snow again and again, and again and again he stood back up. The wind slapped his face and growled low in his ears. Still he went on, one step at a time, remembering his father's words. In the hands of one, it is empty. Held by two pairs of hands, it will never break. Had those words really been only about the gourd?
As the night was turning to morning, the younger brother reached the pass. In the white wind he could see one shape, curled up small. It was his brother. Staring at his own frozen palms, the elder brother was murmuring in a tiny voice, "It won't open. It won't open anymore." The hand that had done nothing but grip had forgotten how to open.
Without a word, the younger brother laid his own straw cape over his brother's back. Then he took his brother's frozen hands and wrapped them gently in his own. He breathed on them, rubbed them, and wrapped them again. For a long, long while, he stayed just like that. At last, his brother's fingers twitched. The tightly shut hand slowly opened, the way a flower opens.
Just then, from the bottom of the crack, came a small clink. The gourd that should have fallen away came floating up on the wind, and hung softly right in front of them. Hesitating, the elder brother reached out his hand. The younger brother put his hands on the other side. Four hands together held one gourd.
At once the raging wind went quiet. What spilled from the mouth of the gourd was not rice, and not gold. It was a warm, soft wind from the south. The wind went down the pass, melted the snow, loosened the frozen river, and gently shook awake the little shoots sleeping under the withered fields.
That year, the earliest spring of all came to the northern land. That very day, the elder brother threw his storehouse key into the valley and flung the door wide open. Rice and beans were shared through the whole village. "I was afraid, all that time," he said. The younger brother smiled and answered, "Brother, from now on let us hold it together."
The two of them built a small shrine at the top of the pass and set the gourd inside it. Whenever a traveller comes climbing up, the brothers always say the same thing. "Open both of your hands and see." Into open hands, something warm comes spilling. They say that is why, even now, spring comes earliest of all to the northern land.
The wind on the pass is blowing gently tonight as well. The two brothers lie down side by side in their hut, listening to the sound of the wind passing over the roof, and close their eyes. You too, open your palms softly and take a slow breath. The warm thing is already there. Good night.
